Find files by describing them in plain English
Updated
Short answer
Homedex turns a sentence into filters. “pdfs from last week over 5 mb” becomes kind = PDF, date = last week, size > 5 MB, and the filters appear as chips you can tweak. It also searches file names and the text inside images.
Things you can type
- pdfs from last week over 5 mb
- videos from my iphone in august
- screenshots with wifi password
- zips bigger than 1gb older than 6 months
- receipts from gmail last month
What it understands
Kinds of file (photos, videos, PDFs, spreadsheets, archives, apps), dates (“yesterday”, “in March”, “older than a year”), sizes (“over 100 mb”), sources (“from WhatsApp”), cameras (“from my iPhone”) and words inside images. The parsing runs on your computer, with no AI service involved.
Questions
- Does search use an online AI?
- No. Queries are parsed on your computer by rules written for file search, so it is instant, works offline and sends nothing anywhere.
- Can I still search by exact file name?
- Yes. Any word that isn't a filter is matched against file names and the text inside images.
