How to find large files on Windows 11 and 10

Updated

Short answer

In File Explorer, open This PC or a folder and type size:>1GB in the search box to list files over 1 GB (or size:gigantic for files over 4 GB). Settings → System → Storage → Cleanup recommendations also lists large unused files. Homedex keeps a live Large Files view with previews so you can see what each file is before removing it.

Clean Up: old installers, forgotten downloads and big old videos, then Trash Selected moves them to the Recycle Bin

With File Explorer

  1. 1
    Open the drive

Open File Explorer, then This PC → Local Disk (C:), or the folder you want to check.

  2. 2
    Search by size

Type size:>1GB into the search box. Change the number to suit, e.g. size:>500MB.

  3. 3
    Sort the results

Switch to Details view and click the Size column to put the biggest first.

size:>1GB

Size words Windows understands

  • size:tiny (0 – 16 KB)
  • size:small (16 KB – 1 MB)
  • size:medium (1 – 128 MB)
  • size:large (128 MB – 1 GB)
  • size:huge (1 – 4 GB)
  • size:gigantic (over 4 GB)

With Homedex

Type “videos bigger than 2gb” or “files over 500 mb older than a year”. Homedex searches its index instantly, without crawling the drive, and shows big previews so you know what a file is before you move it to the Recycle Bin.

Questions

Why is searching by size so slow in File Explorer?
Outside indexed folders, File Explorer reads every file on the drive for each search. Apps with their own index answer instantly.
Which large files are safe to delete?
Your own videos, installers and downloads you no longer need are safe to remove. Leave files in Windows, Program Files and hidden system files like pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys alone.

Every file you own, easy to find.

Homedex is a visual file browser for Windows. Big previews, plain-English search, text inside screenshots, duplicate cleanup — all on your device.
